Assessment of sleep begins with a comprehensive assessment of comorbidity, sleep quality and sleep patterns. Sleep quality can be measured subjectively using sleep assessment tools. Sleep assessment is essential for:

  • Assessing medical, psychiatric or other comorbid conditions
  • Measuring the severity of insomnia 
  • Defining the nature of the sleep problem in more detail 
  • Developing a shared understanding between the patient and clinician of the problem and enabling shared decision making about the treatment
